CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – After picking up his eighth-straight victory on the season, Georgia Tech sophomore Guillermo Gomez withdrew due to a knee injury in the quarterfinals at the ITA Mideast Region Championships Sunday in Chapel Hill, N.C.
“Guillermo played a solid match in which he fought hard and had the pure will to win,” assistant coach Aljosa Piric said. “It was unfortunate that he had to pull out of the quarterfinals, but it is in our best interest that he is 100-percent for the national indoors in three weeks.”
The winner of the Mideast Regional receives an automatic bid into the National Indoor Championships on Nov. 6. Gomez already qualified for the national tournament by winning the consolation bracket at the D’Novo All-American one week ago in Tulsa, Okla.
The Alicante, Spain native began the day with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over UNC’s Clay Donato in the morning’s round of 16. The win would set a matchup between Gomez and Virginia’s Houston Barrick in the quarterfinals, but Barrick advanced due to the injury.
The Jackets will be back in action on Thursday, Nov. 6, when they close out their fall season at the ITA National Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va.
