Less than five full days after its heartbreaking season-opening loss to Tennessee, Georgia Tech looks to rebound against Jacksonville State in Saturday’s home opener at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
Georgia Tech dominated Tennessee for much of Monday’s opener at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and held staggering advantages in total yards (655-369), rushing yards (535-148), first downs (33-18) and time of possession (41:27-18:33) but was doomed by two costly turnovers and two missed kicks in the 42-41, double-overtime defeat.
One of the many bright spots from Monday’s loss was the performance turned in by TaQuon Marshall. Making the first start of his career, the junior quarterback set three Georgia Tech records and one Atlantic Coast Conference record against Tennessee. Marshall’s 249 rushing yards were the most ever by a Georgia Tech or an ACC quarterback. He also set school records for a player of any position with five rushing touchdowns and 44 carries.
Georgia Tech is 93-25-4 (.779) all-time in 122 home openers and have won 10-straight and 17 of its last 18 lid-lifters at Bobby Dodd Stadium. The Yellow Jackets are a perfect 9-0 in home openers under head coach Paul Johnson.
The Jackets face a very dangerous opponent on Saturday in Jacksonville State. The Gamecocks are ranked No. 5 nationally in this week’s NCAA Division I FCS coaches poll and well-rested after topping No. 13 Chattanooga, 27-13, two weeks ago on Aug. 26. JSU owns five wins over FBS foes in the past 23 seasons, two since 2010 — 49-48 (2OT) at Ole Miss in 2010, 32-26 (OT) at Georgia State in 2013.
Saturday is Georgia Tech’s annual GOLDOUT game at Bobby Dodd Stadium. All fans are encouraged to wear gold to support the Yellow Jackets at the 2017 home opener. In conjunction with the GOLDOUT game, Georgia Tech’s official GOLDOUT t-shirts are now available for purchase. The shirts are available at Barnes & Noble @ Georgia Tech, located in Tech Square, and can also be purchased online by clicking HERE.
