March 15, 2003

ATLANTA – Sophomore Catherine Gunn’s dominating performance at No. 1 singles led the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team to a 6-1 victory over Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center in Atlanta, Ga. The win for the Yellow Jackets (8-2, 2-0 ACC) was the first against the Demon Deacons (1-13, 0-2 ACC) since the 1990 season, a streak of 15-straight matches prior to today’s match.

Gunn began her outstanding afternoon in doubles action, as she teamed with Sekita Grant to pick up a win at No. 2 doubles over Katie Martzoff and Danielle Schwartz by an 8-5 score. Tech clinched the doubles point in the match when the team of Kelly Anderson and Jaime Wong downed Wake’s Aimee Smith and Karin Coetzee at No. 1 doubles in a tiebreaker by a 9-8 (1) score.

In singles action, Gunn continued her solid play since moving to the No. 1 spot in the lineup, as she claimed her fourth-straight win. Against the Deacons, she defeated Karin Coetzee in straight sets, dropping just on game en route to a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

Rookie Kelly Anderson was the next singles winner for the Jackets, as she claimed a straight-set victory over Aimee Smith. Anderson won the first set with ease by a 6-1 score, before holding on to win the second by a 6-4 count. Tech claimed the overall team win when senior Jaime Wong captured a tight straight-set match over Katie Martzoff at No. 2 singles, by scores of 6-4 and 7-5.

Senior Mysti Morris was the Yellow Jackets’ final singles winner of the day, as she needed three sets to defeat Danielle Schwartz at No. 5 singles. Morris dropped the first set by a 7-6 (7) score, before winning the second frame by a 6-3 count and then the match in a tiebreaker, 10-7. Georgia Tech’s other point in the match came when Wake’s Sandie Knight defaulted her match against the Jackets’ Lyndsay Shosho at No. 6.

Georgia Tech will return to action on Monday when it hosts Texas A&M at the Bill Moore Tennis Center in a match that will get under way at noon.
