Feb. 2, 2003

AUBURN, ALA. – Led by a pair of victories by sophomore Catherine Gunn, the 18th-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team bounced back from a loss at South Alabama to defeat 32nd-ranked Auburn by a 5-2 score on Sunday afternoon at the Luther Young Tennis Complex.

The Yellow Jackets (2-1) battled to claim the doubles point in the match by sweeping all three matches to open the day. Gunn, along with partner Maria Nieto defeated the Tigers’ (3-1) tandem of Isabel Rosenbrock and Ashley Cowart by an 8-2 score at No. 2, while Tech’s team of Jaime Wong and Kelly Anderson were winners at No. 1 doubles over Petra Bercik and Carolina Ramirez by a 9-8 (8-6) score. In the third doubles match of the day, the Jackets’ team of Lyndsay Shosho and Annelies Schenk downed Auburn’s Sarah Suitor and Jenny Paul by a 9-7 count.

In singles action, Gunn got Tech started at No. 2, defeating Petra Bercik in straight sets. Gunn rolled to a win in the first set by a 6-1 score before continuing her outstanding play, winning the second set by a score of 6-2. Rookie Kelly Anderson kept her record perfect as a Yellow Jacket, defeating the Tigers’ Sarah Suitor at No. 4 in straight sets by a 6-2, 6-1 score.

Tech wrapped up the win in the match with the final two matches of the day, as Lyndsay Shosho and Maria Nieto picked up wins at Nos. 5 and 6 singles respectively.
