THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech volleyball team fell in a five-set thriller to Coastal Carolina on Friday in the final game of the first day of the GT Courtyard by Marriott Atlanta Midtown Invite.
How It Happened
In set one, the Jackets took the lead at 12-11 and never looked back, winning the opening frame 25-17 on a 7-1 run. Set two was a back and forth battle that featured seven lead changes and 14 tied scores, with Coastal Carolina eventually coming out victorious, 25-22.
The momentum stayed in the Chanticleers’ favor as they edged the Jackets in set three, 25-21. Georgia Tech recovered with a 25-23 win in set four to force a fifth frame, but Coastal Carolina jumped out to a 7-3 start in game five to put the match away, 15-9.
Quote
“We’re so lucky to play in the gym that we do,” head coach Michelle Collier said. “The fans are awesome. The atmosphere is great and so is the energy. It’s one of the best places to play in the country. I’d like to thank everyone that came out, and hopefully they’ll keep coming out and support us as we work hard to get better.
“I thought we started out pretty well, but I didn’t think we maintained the intensity and the focus in how we were serving the same way that we did in the first set. We went back to it in the fourth set, and had trouble again in the fifth. In a game of 15, if you miss three serves, you put yourself in a bad spot. Coastal Carolina played great; when they had the ball to the setter they were effective.”
Quick Hits
– In game one, Teegan Van Gunst had almost as many kills by herself (7) as Coastal Carolina had in the set (9).

– Sydney Wilson tied her career high with 10 kills.
– London Ackermann had 20 digs and Rebecca Martin added seven.
– The match featured 29 total tied scores and 11 lead changes.
