THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech swimming and diving team opens its 2014-15 campaign with a pair of dual meets on the road this weekend. Friday, the Yellow Jackets are at Penn State, and travel to Navy Saturday.
Friday night’s meet against the Nittany Lions at McCoy Natatorium begins at 5 p.m. Saturday’s meet versus Navy, which will be contested in meters, begins at 12 p.m. For live scoring of the Navy meet, click here.
The Yellow Jackets return 21 men and 22 women from last year’s squads, while welcoming 15 new student-athletes to the Flats. The returnees are headlined by senior Andrew Kosic, who was an All-America last season and one of six Jackets that competed in the NCAA Championship, along with senior Nico van Duijn, juniors Mats Westergren and Ricky Lehner and former Jacket Declan Poorman.
Tech tuned up for the 2014-15 season last weekend at the GT Aquatic Center with a White-Gold intrasqaud meet that was won by the Gold, 104-85. Junior Erika Staskevicius won both the 50 and the 100 free and was part of three relays wins for the Gold Team.
Kosic won the 100 and 200 free events to help pace the White Team. Shannon Lumbra and Brad Homza claimed 1-meter victories in the diving well.
“We are leaps and bounds ahead of where we were this time last year,” said sixth-year head coach Courtney Shealy Hart following the meet. “That speaks to the hard work we’ve put in this summer and in the preseason.”
Following this weekend’s action, Tech opens its home schedule by hosting Notre Dame and South Carolina on Friday, October 17 at 4 p.m.
