2015 #ACCWSD Day 2 Results

THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are in 11th place Thursday after the first two days of the 2015 ACC Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships at the GT Aquatic Center. The Jackets have 99 points.

Through eight events, Virginia leads the field with 486 points, followed by North Carolina in second with 458 points. NC State (383 points), Louisville (369) and Virginia Tech (342) are third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

Georgia Tech’s best Day 2 performances came during the women’s 1-meter diving preliminaries as two Yellow Jacket divers scored. Junior Shannon Lumbra narrowly missed making the finals, finishing 13th with a score of 273.90. Sophomore Andrea Demick finished 20th with a score of 247.40.

“I’m proud of how well Shannon and Andrea did in the diving finals,” head coach Courtney Shealy Hart said. “The diving competition is tough, but they fought hard and did well.

“Our team is staying positive and loose,” Shealy Hart said. “We still have two more days of swimming left to go and can still score well. All we can do is keep a positive mindset and keep swimming.”

During the morning swimming prelims, Sarah Williford finished 25th in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:53.33. Chiara Ruiu finished 34th at 4:59.06.

Junior Efrat Rotsztjen was Georgia Tech’s top performer in the 200 IM prelims, finishing 33rd with a time of 2:03.81. Freshman Kira de Bruyn finished 43rd (2:07.18), while Catherine Richards finished 47th (2:11.23).

All five of Georgia Tech’s swimmers in the 50 freestyle prelims posted times under 24 seconds. Freshman Morgan Lyons posted the fastest time by a Yellow Jacket at 23.54; junior Erika Staskevicius had the second-fastest GT time at 23.61.

During Thursday’s evening session, the Yellow Jackets competed in only one finals race – the 200-yard medley relay. Tech’s foursome of Lyons, Staskevicius, Darelle Cowley and Ruiu finished 11th with a time of 1:33.52.
