@GT_MTEN Signs Phillip Gresk to NLI

May 12, 2015

THE FLATS – Phillip Gresk, one of the top junior players in Europe, has signed a letter-of-intent with Georgia Tech and will play tennis for the Yellow Jackets, head coach Kenny Thorne announced Tuesday.

A native of Warsaw, Poland, the 19-year-old Gresk lived in Bradenton, Fla. from 2003-2010 before returning to Poland. He graduated from the Florida Virtual School and plays out of the Eagleton Ferreira Academy. He reached no. 84 in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior rankings and is currently ranked 1722 in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour. Gresk has qualified for 12 ITF futures main draws in the last calendar year.

Gresk, who measures 6-foot-7 and weighs 225 pounds, is currently ranked No. 1 in Poland and No. 3 in Europe among junior players. He reached the singles semifinals of the men’s Polish Championship in 2015, and the quarterfinals of an ITF futures event in Egypt in 2014. In doubles, he won the gold medal in the 2011 European Youth Olympics in Turkey, and the championship of the 2010 European Championship in the Czech Republic.

“Phillip is a great addition to an already solid team,” said Tech coach Kenny Thorne, who has eight of nine players returning from a team that reached the NCAA Tournament. “He is a very good student and understands the benefits the Georgia Tech degree offers. We have good chemistry on this team and Phillip really got along great with our guys. He is a proven player as one of the better juniors in the world. He is a good player now but we think he has a lot of potential to continue to get a lot better. He is definitely the type of student-athlete we are looking to have represent us.”

Gresk reached the singles semifinals of the men’s Polish Championship in 2015, and the quarterfinals of a futures event in Egypt in 2014. In doubles, he won the gold medal in the 2011 European Youth Olympics in Turkey, and the championship of the 2010 European Championship in the Czech Republic.

Gresk is Tech’s second tennis signee in the 2015 class, joining Andrew Li of Hong Kong, who signed his letter-of-intent last November and has since won two important singles titles in events in his native Hong Kong.
