Tulsa, Okla. – Georgia Tech’s Guillermo Gomez defeated Raony Carvalho in straight sets Sunday to capture the consolation title in the D’Novo All-American Championship tennis tournament at the University of Tulsa.
The sophomore from Alicante, Spain downed Raony Carvahlo of Texas Tech, 6-1, 6-4, capturing his fourth straight-set match in the five consolation matches he played. The win earned him a spot in the ITA National Indoor Championships in January.
“Like his two matches Saturday, Guillermo made it look much easier than it really was today,” said head coach Kenny Thorne. “He served very well, and when he does that, his ground strokes are as good as anybody’s. I’m very proud of him.”
Gomez got into the consolation bracket after falling to the nation’s No. 2-ranked player in the main draw of singles, but lost only one set in five back draw matches.
