CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Georgia Tech sophomore Guillermo Gomez advanced to the round of 16 at the ITA Indoor National Championships on Thursday, defeating Blake Strode of Arkansas at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.
The Alicante, Spain native took down Strode in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-3, for his ninth consecutive win on the fall season. He now faces the winner of Thursday’s match between Southern Cal’s Robert Farah and Kentucky’s Bruno Agostinelli on Friday afternoon.
“Guillermo did a lot of good things out there today,” said assistant coach Aljosa Piric, who travelled with Gomez to Virginia. “He kept his composure the entire match, and made some good changes as the match progressed. He will have to stay aggressive and continue to play within himself as the tournament moves on.”
The rest of the Yellow Jackets will begin play at the Bulldog Scramble on Friday in Athens, Ga. Play starts at 9 a.m. with a round of doubles followed by singles action. Doug Kenny, Kevin King, Dusan Miljevic, Miguel Muguruza, Eliot Potvin, Austin Roebuck and Ryan Smith will all compete in the three-day tournament.
