Georgia Tech’s Hall, Smith on Doak Walker Watch List

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech senior Hassan Hall (Atlanta, Ga./Maynard Jackson H.S.) and redshirt junior Dontae Smith (Spring Hill, Tenn./Spring Hill H.S.) are among 73 candidates on the official preseason watch list for the 2022 Doak Walker Award, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced on Wednesday. The Doak Walker Award is presented annually to college football’s top running back.

Hall enrolled at Georgia Tech in January after amassing 3,843 all-purpose yards (1,299 rushing) and 13 touchdowns (11 rushing) in four seasons at Louisville, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in communication in December 2021.

Smith has been a home run threat from the running back position for the Yellow Jackets for each of the past three seasons, as he has run for seven touchdowns in just 121 career carries, good for a score every 17.3 rushes. He has led the Yellow Jackets in yards per rush each of the past two seasons – 6.9 in 2020 and 5.6 in 2021.

Georgia Tech is one of only five Power Five conference programs – joining Mississippi State, Southern California, Texas and Wisconsin – and one of 12 teams overall with multiple candidates on this season’s initial Doak Walker Award watch list.

A national selection committee consisting of past recipients, former National Football League All-Pro and collegiate All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives will named 10 semifinalists, followed by three finalists, for the 2022 Doak Walker Award in November. The winner will be announced during The Home Depot College Football Awards show on Dec. 8, which airs live on ESPN.

The Doak Walker Award is named in honor of SMU’s Doak Walker, a three-time consensus All-America running back from 1947-49.

Smith will join tight end Dylan Leonard, defensive back Zamari Walton and head coach Geoff Collins in representing Georgia Tech at the 2022 Atlantic Coast Conference Football Kickoff on Thursday in Charlotte, N.C. Live coverage will be available beginning at 9 a.m. on ACC Network and ACC Network Extra.
