Jan. 19, 2002

Athens, Ga. – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team had a strong return to action on Friday, winning all but one of its matches on the first day of play at the Georgia Invitational being held at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Tennis Center in Athens, Ga.

Yellow Jacket junior Jaime Wong got things going for Tech, as she is the event’s fifth seed and won her opening match with Carolina Maurer of Auburn in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

Tech newcomer Sekita Grant, who was seeing her first action for the Jackets since transferring to The Flats from California, followed Wong. Grant was impressive on the opening day, winning two matches in straight sets, including a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Karem Harboe of Mississippi in the first round and a 6-3, 6-1 win over Olivia Mragon of Brenau in the second round.

The final member of the Tech contingent in singles play was sophomore Fallon Koon, who fell to Klara Miklikova in the first round.

In doubles action, the team of Grant and Wong captured their only match of the day over Bartlett and McNamee of Georgia Southern by an 8-2 score.

The Georgia Invitational will continue Saturday and conclude on Monday with the final round of play. Full results are available at www.georgiadogs.com.
