ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team continued to find success in the second week of the season, placing two singles players and a doubles team into Sunday’s draw finals at the Lady Gamecock Classic. The tournament is being played at the Maxcy Gregg Tennis Center in Columbia, S.C.
In singles play, Tech junior Jaime Wong advanced to the final of the “A” singles draw with a win in the semis over Kenoyer of South Carolina in an easy 6-1, 6-3 straight-set victory. Joining Wong in a draw final will be senior Laura Ozolins, who defeated UNC Greensboro’s N. Cherry in the semi-finals by a 6-3, 6-2 count. That win followed a quarterfinal victory over Sutton of South Carolina by a 6-2, 6-3 score. Ozolins advanced to face L. Tan of South Carolina, while Wong will square off with the Gamecocks Radman. The Yellow Jacket doubles team of Ozolins and freshman Catherine Gunn downed Magori and Camargo of College of Charleston to reach the finals of the “B” doubles draw.
Gunn also played in the “B” singles draw, and won her quarterfinal match with Valkenhoff of Charleston by a 6-2, 6-1 score, but fell to Tan of South Carolina in the semis by a 3-6, 5-7 count. She will now face Greensboro’s Cherry in the third-place match.
Tech’s Kristen Roberson fell in the semis of the “C” singles draw, as she dropped a 6-2, 4-6, 6-7 (6) decision to Wojdyto of South Carolina to fall into the third-place match. In that match on Sunday, Roberson will face teammate Mason Miller, who also lost in the semis, falling by a 4-6, 2-6 score to South Carolina’s Brown.
In the Jackets’ final match of the day, the doubles team of Wong and Roberson lost to Radman and Boyanovich of South Carolina by a 5-8 score.
The Lady Gamecock Classic will conclude on Sunday with singles draw finals slated to begin at 10:30 a.m. Full tournament results and draws are available at www.uscsports.com.
