BLACKSBURG, Va. – In an effort to reenergize its look, while staying connected to its past, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are unveiling cutting-edge football uniforms for the 2012 season, and showcasing them for the first time in front of a prime-time national television audience on Labor Day at Virginia Tech.

In conjunction with Georgia Tech’s official apparel sponsor, Russell Athletic®, the Yellow Jackets take the field against the Hokies in a brand new white uniform, and are also unveiling a white helmet with a gold GT logo. Monday night’s jersey is one of a number of different combinations available to the Jackets in 2012, which includes last year’s model.

The hexagonal pattern is the dominant design element of the jersey, and is carried into the look of the new white helmet. The hexagonal pattern has become synonymous with Georgia Tech, as the shape is considered the strongest geometric object and used by yellowjackets to build their nests.

The Georgia Tech football student-athletes got their very first look at the new design when they arrived at Lane Stadium this afternoon.

“Uniform design is a very hot topic among student-athletes,” said Athletic Director Dan Radakovich. “College football players today want to feel they have the most modern, cutting edge designs in which to perform. The key is to maintain a connection to our history and tradition while providing the apparel that attracts the very best student-athletes nationwide.”

“It was imperative the new uniforms paid homage to Georgia Tech’s past, but also made a statement with younger players and catalyzed a spirit of enthusiasm for the season ahead,” said Gary Barfield, executive vice president of Russell Brands, LLC. “The new designs incorporate historical elements of the Georgia Tech uniforms players and fans alike know and love. We worked closely with Coach Johnson, Dan Radakovich, and members of Georgia Tech’s support and equipment staff and administration to get feedback on the design elements they felt were critical.”

Beginning Monday night, fans have the opportunity to order replica jerseys online at RamblinWreck.com via Team Fan Shop, and jerseys will be available beginning Tuesday at the Barnes & Noble Georgia Tech Bookstore and at Tailgaters Alley locations in the Atlanta area.

Tech is bringing white helmets back to the Flats for the first time since 2006, but will keep the traditional gold helmet in the rotation for 2012.

In all, Tech will have three newly-designed jersey tops (white, gold and navy), two new pant styles (white and gold), and two different helmets (white and gold). Last year’s jersey design also remains in the rotation for 2012.
