Georgia Tech Men's Tennis Takes 13 at Puerto Rico Invitational

No. 25 Jose Muguruza upset No. 21 Conor Niland of California, 7-6 (6), 2-6, 7-6 (4) and later defeated No. 34 Fabrizio Sestini of TCU (7-5, 7-5) to lead the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team on day two of the Puerto Rico Invitational. On the day, the Jackets took 13 out of 23 total matches, including 12 singles victories.

Also winning two singles matches for the Jackets were Marko Rajevac who picked up victories over Daniel Sebescen of Cal, 6-3, 6-4 and Jacopo Tezza of TCU, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. In addition, David North won two matches, defeating California’s Patrick Briaud 6-1, 6-2 and the Horned Frogs’ Rafael Abreu, 7-5, 6-3. Jordan Delass also won twice, beating Ken Nakahara of California, 6-3, 6-0 and Andrew Ulrich from TCU, 6-3, 6-4.

Other victories in singles for the Jackets came from Sukhwa Young, who won in straight sets over the Bear’s Tyler Browne, 6-4, 6-3, George Gvelesiani who rallied to defeat California’s John Pettit, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (5), 6-4, Zachary Rath who easily handled Jordan Freitas of TCU, 6-1, 6-3. In addition Scott Blackmon defeated Brandon Davis of Illinois, 7-6 (2), 6-4 while Noah Tyler won over the Fighting Illini’s Connor O’Murnighan, 3-6, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (6).

In doubles action today, the Jackets dropped all three matches played to Illinois.

The Jackets will return to action Saturday for the final day of the Puerto Rico Invitational.
