Feb. 21, 2007

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech Cheerleading squad finished second and the dance squad placed seventh at the 2007 Cheersport National Championships, held at the Georgia Dome on Sunday. The Jackets’ spirit squads were competing in Atlanta for the very first time.

“Both teams did a great job,” said Tech head cheerleading coach Mindy Whire. “They performed well and were full of energy. This competition was great for the Spirit program at Tech.”

The cheerleading squad competed in the College Coed Level Six division. The squad finished with a score of 524.5, to place ahead of in-state rival Georgia Southern and the University of Arkansas at Little-Rock. The team from the University of Western Ontario finished first in the division with a score of 542 for their routine.

The Jackets dance team competed in the College Open Dance division, scoring 458 points for a seventh-place finish. The squad placed ahead of the Kennesaw State University dance team and a squad from Michigan. In first place was the CDX Move Dance Company – OK, who finished with 516.5 points.

“We had several parents and young cheerleaders running up to our squad after their performance for pictures, autographs and information on cheering at Tech.,” added Whire. I think we created some new Georgia Tech fans.”
