Athens, Ga. – Georgia Tech was shut out for the first time this spring, 4-0, at the hands of 35th-ranked Georgia Thursday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
The 46th-ranked Yellow Jackets lost for the third time in five matches and fell to 6-3, while the Bulldogs improved to 4-5. Tech has played four top-40 teams this spring and has another one on the road next Tuesday when it visits No. 11 Tennessee.
Georgia won the doubles point on courts 3 and 2 where Eric Diaz and Austin Smith dispatched Tech’s freshman duo of Cole Fiegel and Will Showers, 8-5 and Garrett Brasseaux and Nathan Pasha got by Casey Kay and Nathan Rakitt in a tiebreaker, 8-7. Tech’s top team of Carlos Benito and Eduardo Segura, ranked 36th nationally, were leading the No. 14 team of Hernus Pieters and Ben Wagland, 6-4, but the match was halted after Georgia captured the point.
From there, the Bulldogs struck quickly in singles with Pasha (ranked No. 30) taking out Rakitt at No. 1, 6-1, 6-2, and Pieters downing Kay, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4. Tech’s Benito fought back from a first-set loss to even his match with No. 16 Smith on court 2, but Smith won the third set, 6-0, to clinch the match.
The other three matches were not completed, though Segura and Showers were putting up a fight for Tech in their third sets on courts 3 and 6.
