KENNESAW, Ga. – The Georgia Tech softball team (20-29) shutout Kennesaw State (25-23), 4-0, Tuesday evening at Bailey Park.
The Yellow Jackets got on the board first in the fourth inning. With one out, Courtney Ziese reached on a Kennesaw State miscue. Katie Krzus followed and was robbed of a home run as the ball bounced off the top of the centerfield fence and back in to fair territory for a double.
Colleen Darragh stepped to the plate and ripped a line drive down the left field line to score both runners and put Tech on the board 2-0.
The Jackets added a third run in the fifth inning as Morgan Taylor singled to lead off the frame. Pinch runner Draven Sonnon moved up two bases on a ball put in play by Samantha Pierannunzi and scored on an Owls’ error to put Georgia Tech in front 3-0.
Georgia Tech tacked on an insurance run in the seventh. Malea Bell pinch hit for Jessica Kowalewicz and smacked a line drive to center to lead off the inning. Kowalewicz entered to run and made it around the bases on two Kennesaw State errors.
Jenna Goodrich (9-15) threw a three-hit shutout with two strikeouts and zero walks to earn the win.
Kennesaw State starter Logan Viers (11-7) suffered the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in four innings pitched. Morgan Sikes pitched three innings in relief and allowed two runs on two hits.
“Jenna pitched a heck of a game, and we played great defense behind her,” head coach Shelly Hoerner said. “We capitalized on offense when we needed to in clutch situations. It was a great win especially since we are preparing for exams. I’m proud of the team and their focus.”
