Freshmen Shine for Tech on Day One of Southern Intercollegiate Championships

Sept. 8, 2006

ATLANTA – Freshmen Luke Rassow-Kantor and Austin Roebuck and junior Jordan Delass recorded first-round victories to lead Georgia Tech on day one of the 38th-annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships, which is being held at the Dan Magill Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Georgia Sept. 8-11

Rassow-Kantor pulled out a third-set win in a tiebreaker against the University of Tennessee’s Chris Racz in the Division II singles bracket, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (5), while Roebuck posted a 7-6, 6-3 win against South Florida’s Keith Embree in the Division III bracket.

Delass earned the Yellow Jackets third and final singles victory on the day with an easy 6-3, 6-0 win over Florida’s Jordan Dolberg to set up a second-round Saturday morning match against Vanderbilt’s top singles player Ryan Preston, the tournament’s No. 6 seed, in the lower half of the Division I singles bracket.

The remaining five Yellow Jackets didn’t fare quite as well on the first day of competition, but four of the five will participate in the back draw, which begins play Saturday morning at the Dan Magill Tennis Center.

George Gvelesiani is the only Yellow Jacket that will not compete the rest of the weekend, after suffering an ankle injury in his first round match against East Tennessee State’s Lisandro Picardo.

The tournament features players from 35 different schools around the southeast and is comprised of three singles and two doubles divisions. The first two singles brackets feature full 64-man draws, while the third is a 60-man bracket. There will be approximately 40 teams in each of the two doubles brackets, which begin play Saturday.
