Four Jackets Advance in Main Singles Draw

THE FLATS – Four members of the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team advanced to the round of 32 in the main singles draw this afternoon of the 2014 ITA Southeast Regional at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.

In total, the Yellow Jackets picked up four singles wins and two doubles victories on day one of the regional.

Two Tech doubles pairings advanced to the round of 16 in the main doubles draw on Friday morning. Freshman Paige Hourigan and sophomore Rasheeda McAdoo won their first round matchup against FIU’s Nema Caluk and Yana Koroleva, 8-5.  Sophomore Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer and freshman Alexis Prokopuik came out victorious against Stetson’s Laura Dean and Alizee Michaud, 8-7.

The doubles duo of junior Natasha Prokhnevska and freshman Johnnise Renaud fell to Georgia’s Mariana Gould and Ellen Perez, 8-5.

Both doubles tandems that went on to the round of 16 failed to advance to the quarterfinals of the main doubles draw. Hourigan and McAdoo fell, 8-5, to the number four seed and the #10-ranked, Lauren Herring and Silva Garcia of Georgia. Anton-Ohlmeyer and Prokopuik suffered an, 8-3, loss to the number six overall seed, Florida’s Kourtney Keegan and Brooke Austin.

Four Yellow Jackets won their first round singles match in the main singles draw to advance to the round of 32 which will be played tomorrow. Renaud, the number eight seed, recorded a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Central Florida’s Caroline Eberhart.

McAdoo picked up a first round win, after dropping Miami’s Silvia Fuentes, 6-0, 6-3. Hourigan faced Georgia Southern’s Jordana Klein and beat her opponent in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-1.

Prokhnevska, who is the number 15 seed of the main singles draw, came back after losing set one, 6-1, to win the next two sets, 6-4, 6-2, against Georgia State’s Kristin Rehse.

Anton-Ohlmeyer fell in straight sets to Miami’s Sinead Lohan, 6-2, 6-2. Prokopuik also fell in her first round match, 6-4,6-2, to Georgia State’s Niriantsa Rasolomalala. Anton-Ohlmeyer and Prokopuik will play in the A-singles consolation draw tomorrow.  

Freshman Vooha Vellanki competed in the B singles draw against FAU’s Lyndsey Boos. Vellanki won set one, 6-4, but was defeated in sets two and three, 6-4, 6-54.

The round of 16 of main draw doubles kicks off day two of the ITA Southeast Regional on Saturday. Following the doubles, the round of 32 of the A-consolation draw will take place, followed by the round of 32 of the main singles draw.
