Falconi Named ACC Women's Tennis Co-Player of the Week

March 31, 2009

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech freshman Irina Falconi and Clemson junior Ani Mijacika have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Co-Players of the Week, announced the conference office Tuesday.

The seventh-ranked Falconi was named Player of the Week for the second time, having also been selected Feb. 24. The honor is the third of the season for the top-ranked Mijacika, who received the honor on Feb. 3 and Feb. 10.

Falconi helped the Yellow Jackets to a perfect 3-0 record during the week. Playing at No. 1 singles, Falconi defeated 61st-ranked Catherine Newman of Vanderbilt, 6-4, 6-4 to clinch the match for Tech. Her 6-0, 6-2 win over Sasha Kulikova of Wake Forest also clinched the match for the Jackets.

Falconi, of Jupiter, Fla., earned her third singles win of the week, a 6-1, 6-1 defeat of NC State’s Berkeley Brock. Falconi also teamed with Sasha Krupina for three doubles wins. The duo helped Tech to take two of three doubles points during the week.

The Yellow Jackets, who have won five straight matches, are 13-5 overall and 6-1 in the ACC.

Mijacika improved to 26-5 overall in singles and now owns a 19-6 individual doubles record. Mijacika downed 99th-ranked Lenka Hojckova of NC State, 6-3, 6-0 and scored a 6-1, 6-1 win over 51st ranked Sasha Kulikova of Wake Forest. She also played a part in wins at No. 1 doubles in both matches.

The wins were Mijacika’s fifth and sixth straight and her 16th and 17th over ranked opponents. The Makarska, Croatia, native boasts a 14-2 record in dual matches and has helped Clemson to post a 6-1 mark in conference matches with a 16-5 overall record.

The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team will return to the Bill Moore Tennis Center next weekend for its final homestand of the regular season. Tech will face Boston College on Saturday and will host Maryland on senior day next Sunday afternoon.
