PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Georgia Tech freshman Irina Falconi led the way on the first day of the qualifying draw at the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Senior Christy Striplin opened the day by teaming with sophomore Noelle Hickey, to defeat Claire Rietsch and Danielle Steinberg of Arizona, 8-1, in the qualifying doubles draw. The No. 46-ranked duo will face LSU’s 11th-ranked Megan Falcon and Mykala Hedberg at 1 p.m. ET Wednesday. The Yellow Jacket’s team of junior Amanda McDowell and Falconi moved on to the second round with a default win over Nevada’s Caroline Bailly and Maria Mizyuk. They will next meet No. 21 Sanaz Marand and Katrina Tsang of North Carolina.
In the singles draw, Falconi defeated Amanda Granson of Duke, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, in the first round. She continued her successful All-American Championship debut with a 6-3, 3-0 win over Katarina Zoricic of William & Mary, who had to retire. Falconi will try and win her way into the main draw against the qualifying draws No. 1 seed Katie Rybakova of Florida State at 1:30 p.m. ET Wednesday.
Striplin began singles play with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-0 win over Taylor Ormond of Baylor but dropped her second round match 6-3, 6-2 to Kristi Boxx of Mississippi.
