Falconi Captures USTA Pro Circuit Atlanta 10K Title

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech rising sophomore Irina Falconi defeated seventh-seeded Jennifer Elie, 6-0, 6-4, to capture the 2009 Norman Wilkerson Tennis Experience 10K title Sunday afternoon at the Sugar Creek Tennis Complex in Atlanta.

Falconi, a native of Jupiter, Fla., opened the day by breaking Elie and quickly captured the first set, 6-0. After going up 2-0 in the second set, Falconi would drop her first game of the day. With the score tied at 4-4, Falconi would break Elie and then hold serve for her first career Pro Circuit title.

“It’s just awesome to be in my own backyard and to win this tournament,” Falconi said. “The fans and staff were absolutely wonderful in making me feel right at home. It’s just an amazing feeling.”

A member of the 2009 USTA Summer Collegiate Team, Falconi will next compete in the St. Joseph, Mo. 10K beginning on July 27.
