THE FLATS Georgia Tech men’s tennis junior Christopher Eubanks and senior Carlos Benito were listed in the preseason rankings for both singles and doubles as released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Tuesday afternoon.
“Chris will have a big target on his back, and that will be good for him,” said head coach Kenny Thorne. “Carlos came out strong last year in singles and doubles. He has a good opportunity to make a big move this season.”
Eubanks ranks a career-high No. 5 on the preseason list. The All-American was ranked No. 7 at the end of the 2015-16 season after reaching as high as No. 6. His impressive summer was highlighted by competing in the main singles draw of the BB&T Atlanta Open and earning a wild card spot in the qualifying round of the U.S. Open. The 6-foot-7 Atlanta native will compete in the main singles draw at the 2016 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men’s All-American Championships in October.
Benito sits in the No. 73 spot, a career high for the senior from Madrid, Spain. Benito finished last season at No. 113, reaching as high as No. 110 during his junior campaign. He carried a record of 15-15 overall and went 7-4 in ACC play in the 2015-16 season. Benito will compete in the qualifying rounds at the ITA All-American Championships for a spot with Eubanks in the main draw.
Eubanks and Benito also begin the year with a doubles ranking of No. 14, the highest ranking the pair has received. They finished the 2015-16 season in the No. 37 spot after going 16-4 overall and boasting a 7-3 record in ACC play. The pair will compete in the main draw for doubles at the ITA All-American Championships in October.
“The entire fall season is an opportunity for our entire team to make a statement,” said Thorne. “An individual player can really break out in the fall tournament format.”
