Dodge Ball, Anyone?

Aug. 8, 2008

ATLANTA – Just when the grind of two-a-day football practices appeared to be taking a toll on the players, Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson found a way to energize the Yellow Jackets.

Dodge ball.

Georgia Tech practiced for two hours in full pads Friday morning, then were mid-way through an afternoon practice in shells when Johnson divided the Yellow Jackets into teams for a good old-fashioned game of dodge ball. Even the coaching staff got involved, giving the players an opportunity to fire back at their position coaches.

“The guys have been working pretty hard, so this was a little break from the monotony,” Johnson said. “I mean, this should be fun, right?”

Aside from kids’ games, Tech did get in some serious work on Friday. The Yellow Jackets ended the morning practice with some late-game clock-management situations, for example.

More work will be done Saturday morning when Tech will scrimmage in Bobby Dodd Stadium at 9:30 a.m. Johnson expects around 120 snaps on Saturday.

“We’ll have a better idea of who can play after tomorrow (Saturday),” Johnson said. “We’ll have some type of working depth chart early next week.”

Georgia Tech has one more full week of practice before classes begin on August 18th.

The Yellow Jackets open the 2008 season Aug. 28 at home against Jacksonville State (7:30 p.m.)
