Divers Highlight Day 2 At ACC Swimming & Diving Championship

Feb. 21, 2013

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Brandon Makinson placed eighth on the 1m, freshman Shannon Lumbra was 12th on the 3m and the women’s 200 free relay posted the second-fastest time in school history to highlight Day 2 for Georgia Tech at the ACC Swimming & Diving Championship.

Makinson scored 321.30 points in Thursday’s preliminary round, then totaled a final-round score of 323.55 to finish eighth overall and score 11 points for Tech’s cause. He and fellow senior Chris Khosravi will also compete in the men’s 3m competition that takes place Friday.

“I’m happy for Brandon,” said head coach Courtney Shealy Hart. “This has been a tough senior season for him battling injury. For him to finish in the top-8 after missing so much time was good to see.”

Lumbra also turned in a solid performance on the 3m springboard, scoring 272.85 points in the prelims – good for a 12th-place finish and five points for the Yellow Jackets. The women’s 1m diving takes place on Friday.

The women’s 200 medley relay of senior Alexis Weber, freshman Erika Staskevicius, freshman Darelle Cowley and senior Kate Riley finished in a time of 1:32.84, which was good for eighth place. Riley sprinted home to anchor the relay with a solid split of 22.16. That relay time of 1:32.84 is the second-fastest in Tech history.

Also for Tech on Thursday, freshman Frederique Lefebvre set a pair of personal bests in the 200 IM, clocking a 2:05.19 in the prelims and a 2:05.15 in the finals to finish 23rd.

With 79 points, Tech sits in eighth place heading into Friday’s action. Virginia’s 309 points leads the women’s championships.

“We need to be better as a team on Friday,” said Hart. “We’re a young team and it all starts with the prelimis. We have to put yourself in scoring position in the morning.”

The championship continues Friday at 11 a.m. with the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, and 100 back preliminaries, with the finals in those events on Friday night at 7 p.m. The men’s 3m diving prelims start 1 p.m. with the finals at 7 p.m. The women’s 1m prelims are at 3:15 p.m. and the finals start at 5 p.m.

Live coverage of the finals on Friday and Saturday can be seen on the ACC Digital Network on and on ESPN3 starting at 7 p.m. For more on the 2013 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships, head to the official website at
