Dennis Gem Blanks Furman for Morales’ 100th Tech Win

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball (9-2) shut out Furman, 5-0, riding a gem of a performance from junior hurler Chandler Dennis on Monday afternoon at Mewborn Field. The win marked No. 100 for coach Aileen Morales during her time leading the way on The Flats as she’s now into her fifth season as the Yellow Jackets’ skipper.

Dennis was nearly untouchable through the afternoon, only allowing a pair of baserunners on the day. The Paladins mustered one hit and drew a walk while the Suwanee, Ga., native piled up a career-high 11 strikeouts for her third complete game win of the season. At the dish, freshman center fielder Ella Edgmon led the way from the nine-hole going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored.

As Dennis commanded the circle while the Jackets were in the field, Tech picked up its only necessary run in the third. Junior catcher Emma Kauf led off the bottom of the frame and stole second, setting up an RBI single up the middle by sophomore catcher Sara Beth Allen. Following a pair of scoreless innings, the White and Gold rallied in the bottom of the sixth with four insurance runs. After loading the bases with a pair of walks and a single by way of sophomore infielder Abby Hughes’ first collegiate hit, Edgmon came through with a two-RBI single up the middle to increase the Jacket lead to 3-0. Kauf followed driving in another run, and graduate first baseman Tricia Awald delivered a knockout blow with an RBI double. Dennis put an exclamation point on her stellar outing in the top of the seventh, striking out the side to cap her career day and a 5-0 win for Georgia Tech.

Game Notes
