Cubaj to Participate in FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech women’s basketball incoming freshman Lorela Cubaj and the Italian National Team are set to open the FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup this weekend. The tournament runs July 22-30 in Udine and Cividale Del Friuli, Italy.

Competition opens July 22-25 with group play for the 16 national teams competing for the title before round of 16 action gets underway on Wednesday, July 26. Eight games will take place each day during group play with a day off on Monday. Italy will meet China, Mali and USA in group play Saturday through Tuesday, respectively.

“We are proud of Lorela for her selection to both the U19 World Cup team and the U18 European Championship team,” commented Georgia Tech head coach MaChelle Joseph. “She is a significant member of the Italian team. It is a great experience for her and will help her prepare for the physical play of the ACC.”

Cubaj, a native of Terni, Itlay, has no shortage of national team experience. In her first European Championship in 2013, she helped lead the team to the semi-finals. She has also been a member of the Italian National Team in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
