THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech cross country team will compete in the 11th annual Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic on Saturday at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park, which is also the site of the 2012 NCAA Division I Championships on Nov. 17. The men will run an 8K starting at 9:30 a.m. and the women will race the 5K at 10:15 a.m.
Tech is one of 115 schools from 24 different states slated to compete in the Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday, making it likely the largest meet in the United States this year. Eleven top-30 teams in the nation are listed to race.
Division I men’s teams ranked in the USTFCCCA Top 30 competing in the race are No. 6 Texas, No. 8 Iowa, No. 25 Eastern Kentucky and No. 28 Columbia.
On the women’s side, No. 1 Washington, No. 8 Vanderbilt, No. 10 Arkansas, No. 12 Arizona, No. 14 Michigan State, No. 17 Penn State and No. 29 Wisconsin will participate in Saturday’s meet.
The Yellow Jacket men are currently ranked No. 6 in the South Region, while the women moved into 11th place.
Tech’s men’s and women’s team finished fourth and second, respectively, at the Virginia Tech Invitational Sept. 15 in the teams’ most recent action. Katie Townsend led the way for the women, while the men were led by Jeremy Greenwald.
The Yellow Jackets competed in the 2010 Greater Louisville Classic with the men’s team finishing 21st and the women’s placing 25th.
