Countdown to Tipoff - 19 Days

Oct. 26, 2008

On Friday, we practiced a little earlier than usual, at 1.30 p.m. We got off to a great start. Circle layups, which is one of our first warm-up drills was perfect. We made 10 in a row, left and right, all in the first time at both ends. Practice was challenging to say the least, but when is it never challenging. We revised our plays through 5 on 5 small games. In these games we keep score of points and rebounds and at the end of each game of about six minutes we tally up who won. Today was even, both blue and white teams won about the same amount of games each. Today was a great day for showing how competitive we really are. It’s never nice to lose and to know that we have the mental toughness to respond from that in a positive way is excellent.

Learning is a big focus now especially with five freshmen, so there’s a lot of teaching during practice. All returning players are doing a great job of helping the coaches out especially with all the new drills the freshmen are encountering. We have always had a focus of communication but we are seeing now how very important it is. It’s not always easy to remember all the things we do but the way we make it happen is by supporting and helping each other out. A great habit we have all obtained is to echo whatever is called out by a coach or a point guard. It’s very helpful because it forces you to communicate and think about what it is exactly that you have to do. We feel like this year is going to be a great season. We have all bonded really closely and have a strong trust with each other. Each practice we have now gets us closer and more prepared for that first game that we are so excited about. I can’t wait to see you all in the stands this season!!
