Countdown to First Pitch: 1 day

Feb. 19, 2009

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech baseball team begins the 2009 season tomorrow when it opens a three-game series with Lipscomb. Every day since February 1, a different member of the 2009 squad has checked in with their thoughts on the upcoming season. Today’s blog, the last of the preseason, is by sophomore Derek Dietrich.

We can feel it coming in the air tonight…We’ve been waiting for this moment for all our lives…

After all the weeks of strength and conditioning, practices and intra-squad games, we are poised for our first weekend of competition and we have many things to be grateful for.

During practices this week, we watched the grounds crew hanging our sponsorship banners around the field. It is exciting and inspiring to see Russ Chandler Stadium receiving final preparations as we complete ours. We are truly fortunate to have the pleasure of playing on such a beautiful surface. It is no wonder that the Rusty C was named “The 2008 STMA National Collegiate Baseball Field of the Year!”

Of course, every year we are lucky to wear the Gold & White in a variety of good-looking uniforms and cool gear. (I can remember how excited and proud I felt the first time I wore a GT uniform). But this season we will also be “stylin” in some sharp new colorful hats. (Hopefully, they will make our faces look better!)

As always, our team is pleased to have the honor of playing for Georgia Tech and our great coaches, who make it fun and rewarding to play baseball here. Everyone has high hopes for this season – our team most of all. With its captivating cast of characters, this team is both talented and “hungry.” While we are most definitely looking forward to our delicious and nutritious pre-game meals (which Steve Tamborra orders before each game), we are hungry in another sense of the word. This team desires a 2009 season that provides intense competition, many victories, a return to the ACC Championships and the chance to represent TECH and the ACC in the College World Series. We believe that “Teamwork is the fuel that allows common people to produce uncommon results,” and we will not settle for less. As Walter Smith, our head-trainer always says; “it’s as simple as that!”

Finally, the baseball season we have all worked so hard toward is beginning. Opening Day is Friday! We invite all YELLOW JACKET FANS to join us. We know we have the best fans in the country and we can’t wait to see you in the stands. Please come to watch us and cheer us on the first step of our journey, because we cannot travel the road to OMAHA alone. We need all of you! Thank you in advance for your support! GO JACKETS!!
