TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Georgia Tech men’s tennis senior Cole Fiegel downed Florida’s Johannes Ingildsen, 6-4, 6-2 on Monday morning to win the consolation draw at the ITA Regional Championships.
Fiegel won through from the qualifying draw to gain entry into the main draw for singles in Tallahassee. As the No. 1-seed in the qualifying draw, the Florida native defeated Miami’s Nile Clark and Florida’s Stephen Madonia to earn his spot in the main draw.
His first and only loss came in the first round of the main draw to Miami’s No. 58-ranked Christian Langmo. From there he dominated the consolation draw, winning four matches in straight sets. He topped Georgia Southern’s Casablancas, Stetson’s Ball, and Georgia State’s Andrei Andrukhou in rout to the final match. In the final match, he avenged teammate, Chris Yun who fell to Ingildsen in the semifinals on Sunday.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Nov. 3-6 when Christopher Eubanks heads to the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y. The rest of the squad will travel to Athens, Ga. for the second time this fall to compete at the Bulldog Scramble, Nov. 4-6.
Assistant coach Derek Schwandt says: “Cole competed with awesome intensity, heart and grit. Today he came out sprinting and didn’t let up. I’m really excited about his game and senior season.”
