Former Georgia Tech football and baseball star and three-year National Football League veteran DeAndre Smelter returned to The Flats in 2023 and is his second season back with the Yellow Jackets. He was an offensive graduate assistant in 2023 and named quality control (wide receivers) in 2024.
Smelter played three seasons of baseball (2011-13) and two seasons of football (2013-14) with the Yellow Jackets. He was selected in the 14th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft but turned down the opportunity to play professionally to attend Tech.
On the gridiron, he is tied for the 10th-most 100-yard receiving games in Georgia Tech history with four, despite playing just two seasons. He also ranks sixth in school history for yards per reception in a season (20.4 in 2014) and career (18.9).
He went on to be selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the fourth round of the 2015 National Football League Draft. He played three seasons with the 49ers (2015-17).
Smelter, who graduated from Tech in 2014 with a B.S. in business administration, began his coaching career last fall as wide receivers coach at Northeast H.S. in Macon, Ga.
