THE FLATS – No. 24 Georgia Tech volleyball head coach Michelle Collier announced senior right-side hitter Mariana Brambilla, senior libero Maddie Tippett and junior middle blocker Erin Moss as team captains for the 2021 season on Wednesday.
“Maddie, Mari and Erin have demonstrated a consistent approach to their experience as members of our program,” said Collier. “They are great teammates and natural leaders by example. I couldn’t think of three more deserving individuals to represent this awesome group of women that we have this year.”
Brambilla enters the year on the heels of a 2020 season in which she was named an AVCA Third Team All-American along with unanimous First Team All-ACC. The Brazilian led the team with 270 kills last season on the way to 1,100 career kills. In the ACC ranks, Brambilla was named ACC Player of the Week once and finished ranked second in kills per set (4.22) and third in points per set (4.77).
Tippett, the Jackets’ primary libero since her arrival on The Flats as a freshman, enters her senior year following leading Tech in digs (193) a season ago. The Atlanta native started all 19 matches as libero in 2020, including playing in 62 of the team’s 64 sets through the year. Her season was highlighted by piling up 22 crucial digs for a season high in Georgia Tech’s 3-2 win over Miami last season.
Moss comes into the season following a sophomore campaign that she started every match and competed in all 64 of Tech’s sets. In doing so, she led the Jackets with a .411 attacking percentage, good for third in program history. Other season highlights include leading the team with 53 total blocks (12 solo, 41 block assists) to average 0.83 blocks per set. The Valdosta, Ga., native shined brightest in Tech’s biggest moment, tallying a season-high five total blocks in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
“I am looking forward to their leadership on and off the court as we continue to navigate the challenges of a competitive season and environment,” added Collier. “Together, with every other member of our program, we will continue to strive to be the best version of ourselves for each other through our core values of evolution, everlasting, excellence and energy!”
Tech will open the regular season on the road at the UCF Challenge by taking on No. 12 Penn State and UCF on Friday in Orlando, Fla. The Jackets will make their official return to O’Keefe Gymnasium hosting the Georgia Tech Classic, beginning with Mississippi State (Sept. 9).
