Blacksburg, Va. — On the final day of the ACC Indoor Championships the Jackets saw Bria Matthews claim the triple jump crown to go along with Avery Barlett, Ben Jean, and Jeanine Williams all finishing in the top three in their events and earning all-conference honors.
“I could not be more proud of what this team accomplished this weekend,” echoed men’s track and field head coach Grover Hinsdale.”
“Today’s scorers were Ben Jean (3rd) and Daniel Pietsch (6th) in the 400m, Avery Bartlett (2nd) in the 800m, Nahom Solomon (8th) in the 3000m and Lionel Jones, Avery Bartlett, Dwayne Watkins, and Ben Jean finished 6th in the 4 x 400m relay. We finished 8th in the final team standings beating 4 (may be 5) fully funded teams. Again, just very proud of this team,” Hinsdale continued.
Amy Ruiz was also impressive, finishing 8th in the mile with a time of 4:45.78, where she was once again within grasp of the school record in the mile.
“The women competed hard throughout the weekend, had some really good results, and we’re proud of their efforts,” said women’s track and field head coach Alan Drosky. “The story of the weekend has to be Bria Matthews, completing her comeback and returning to the top of the podium once again. Bria, coach Nat Page, and coach Jordan have all worked so hard and persevered over the last two years.”
“I’m so happy for all three of them. And once again, Jeanine Williams showed she’s one of the best hurdlers in the conference and in the country. While Amy narrowly missed the school record again, she put together the three best races of her career over the last three days. What a tremendous effort. From a team perspective we are still not where we want to be, but we’re getting closer,” Drosky said.
