THE FLATS — Georgia Tech sophomore offensive lineman Parker Braun is one of 45 student-athletes on the official watch list for the 2017 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, the Tyler (Texas) Chamber of Commerce announced Tuesday.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award is given annually to the “top offensive player in NCAA Division I that exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity.” The recipient must have been born in the state of Texas, attended a Texas high school or attend a Texas junior college or university.
Braun, who attended Hallsville (Texas) H.S. as a senior after moving to the Lone Star State from Florida, was named to ESPN’s true freshman all-America team in 2016 after starting the final eight games of his rookie campaign at left guard. In his eight starts, the Yellow Jackets averaged 277.6 rushing yards and 31.1 points per game, up from the 225.1 rushing yards and 23.8 points per contest prior to his ascension to starter.
He became the first Georgia Tech freshman to ever be named ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week after recording 10 takedowns and helping the Yellow Jackets rush for 309 yards in a 30-20 win over No. 18 Virginia Tech. He also delivered the key block on a three-yard pickup on fourth-and-one from the Jackets’ own 15 yard line in the second quarter of the TaxSlayer Bowl, which sparked a 94-yard touchdown drive that gave Tech a commanding 17-3 lead late in the first half of a season-ending 33-18 triumph over Kentucky.
In all, Georgia Tech was 6-2 with Braun in the starting lineup last season.
Braun and the Yellow Jackets open the 2017 campaign on Sept. 4 when they meet Tennessee in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at brand-new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in downtown Atlanta. The nationally televised contest kicks off at 8 p.m. on Labor Day evening on ESPN.
A very limited number of 2017 Georgia Tech season tickets, which are the only way to secure seats from the Yellow Jackets’ allotment for sold-out opener versus Tennessee at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, remain on sale. In addition to the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game, Georgia Tech season tickets also include all six games at Bobby Dodd Stadium in ’17, including the highly anticipated regular-season finale versus archrival Georgia.
Flex Packs, which allow fans to purchase tickets for any three, four, five or six games at Bobby Dodd Stadium — including the Nov. 25 showdown against Georgia — and single-game tickets for the Yellow Jackets’ home contests versus Jacksonville State (Sept. 9), Pittsburgh (Sept. 23), North Carolina (Sept. 30), Wake Forest (Oct. 21) and Virginia Tech (Nov. 11) are also on sale now.
