Bishop & Knudsen Named Wendy's Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week

March 1, 2004

ATLANTA-Swimming standout Ryan Bishop and All-American softball player Tara Knudsen were named the Wendy’s Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, March 1, 2004.

Bishop, a freshman from Signal Mountain, Tenn., garnered all-ACC honors with his third place finish in the 400-yard individual medley, with an NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 3:53.86. He earned another NCAA ‘B’ cut with his fifth place finish in the 200-yard IM (1:49.64). Bishop earned his third top-ten finish of the week with an eighth place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:04.05).

Knudsen, a senior from Thornton, Colo., led the Yellow Jackets to a 6-2 record last week, including two wins over ranked opponents at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. Knudsen went 2-for-6, with two walks and a double against Gardner-Webb as Tech swept GWU. She then powered Tech past Virginia Tech 6-5 in the opening game of the Leadoff Classic with two home runs and four RBI. The Thornton, Colo., native then broke up Nebraska’s Summer Tobias’ no-hitter in the seventh inning, eventually coming around to score the game’s winning run. In Tech’s next game versus the seventh-ranked Wolverines, Knudsen again broke up a no-hitter, this time against Michigan’s Nicole Motyka, tallying the only run scored for the Jackets. Knudsen drove in three runs later that evening against DePaul, smashing her 39th career home run and tying Tech’s all-time school record in homers, to lift the Yellow Jackets to a 5-1 win. In the semifinals of the Silver Championship bracket, the shortstop drove in three more runs for the Jackets against 16th-ranked Fresno State to advance the Rambling Wreck to the finals against Notre Dame. Knudsen hit three home runs and tallied 10 RBI in the Leadoff Classic to help Tech to a 4-2 record in its first appearance in the prestigious softball tournament. She ended the week hitting .346, with 10 RBI, seven runs scored, two walks and two doubles.
