Bergmann Concludes VNL as Brazil Takes Silver

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech volleyball all-American Julia Bergmann joined Brazil’s national volleyball team for summer competition, competing in the FIVB Volleyball Nations League. The Yellow Jacket standout continued to make an impact internationally at the game’s highest level, starting for Brazil as one of the top producers on the squad and one of just two active NCAA players throughout the VNL encompassed of 16 countries.

In Brazil’s fourth and final week of competition, Bergmann spurred Brazil onto a silver-medal finish. Behind strong performances from Tech’s all-American, Brazil topped Japan 3-1 in the quarterfinals and downed Serbia 3-1 in the semifinals before falling to Italy in the VNL Final.

Individually, Bergmann completed the final week of her striking international campaign with 36 total points, including 32 kills and two blocks, as well as two aces, 24 digs and 31 receptions.

FIVB Volleyball Nations League - Week 3

Bergmann flourished against Japan with 17 points by way of 14 kills, two blocks and an ace. The vaunted Yellow Jacket also anchored Brazil defensively with 12 digs and five receptions, earning a double double between her kills and digs. Bergmann finished top three on her team in five different categories through the match.

Bergmann followed with another dazzling performance facing Serbia, putting together a second straight double double. Finishing second for Brazil in points, attacks and digs, the outside hitter also led the squad on serve receive while picking up one of the team’s lone two aces. In total, Bergmann tallied 16 points, including 15 kills and an ace, along with seven digs and 18 receptions in the victory.

“We made the final. It was a very difficult game, and the word that represents this victory is union. They all helped each other a lot on the court. We lost the first set and managed to get back into the game. We fought a lot in every game, especially when we were behind on the scoreboard. It’s great to make the Nations League final.”

In Brazil’s final contest against Italy, Bergmann added three kills, five digs and eight receptions as the latter two were among the top three on the team.

Amongst the VNL overall, Bergmann led Brazil and finished second in the competition on serve receive (137). The rising senior also ranked top five on her squad in points (139), kills (121), blocks (11), aces (seven) and digs (80) throughout the competition. Her totals in points, kills and aces were also good for top 30 across the league.

Along with Bergmann, rising sophomore outside hitter Bianca Bertolino and incoming graduate transfer outside hitter Tali Marmen have both gained experience at the international level. Bertolino, an ACC All-Freshman Team honoree in her first collegiate season, trained and competed with Argentina’s national team while Marmen helped Israel’s national team win the 2022 Maccabiah Games.
