ATLANTA — Georgia Tech junior Roger Anderson continued his run of success in the main draw of the Omni Hotels ITA Region II Championships, reaching the semifinals on Saturday in Chapel Hill, N.C. The ITA Regionals serve as a qualifying tournament for the ITA National Indoor Championships, which are the second major event of the collegiate tennis season. The Region II tournament is being held at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the campus of the University of North Carolina.
Anderson opened the day against Wake Forest’s David Bere in the round of 16 and quickly advanced with an impressive 6-3, 6-2 win. Anderson, who has yet to lose a set in the tournament, followed that outing with another outstanding showing, disposing of Duke’s Mike Yani in straight sets in the quarterfinals. Anderson claimed the first set by a 6-3 score, then cruised in the second set winning by at love for the final 6-3, 6-0 score. He will now face Romain Jurd of Florida State in the semis, with a berth in the finals on the line Sunday morning.
Tech’s other remaining individual in the main draw was sophomore Joao Menano, whose run in the tournament came to an end in a strong showing in the quarterfinals. Menano won his morning match in strong fashion, downing Pedro Nieto of Virginia Commonwealth by a 6-4, 6-2 count. However, he was unable to advance past FSU’s Jurd, who defeated Menano in a tight 7-5, 7-6(5) match to advance to the semis.
The Yellow Jackets’ Scott Schnugg was scheduled to compete in the quarterfinals of the qualifying singles draw, but results were unavailable at the time of this release and will be updated when posted.
