There is more to Student-Athlete Academic Services than tutoring and scheduling classes. Thanks to the leadership of Associate AD Phyllis LaBaw and Faculty Athletic Representative Dr. Reggie DesRoches, Georgia Tech Athletics is bridging the gap between faculty and student-athletes.
Within the last academic year, Georgia Tech has implemented two new programs – the Men’s Basketball Yellow Jacket Experience and Student-Athlete / Faculty Breakfasts. During the men’s basketball season, faculty guests were invited to three away games to get the true Yellow Jacket Experience of being a student-athlete at Georgia Tech.
In September 2015, Dr. DesRoches unveiled a new program in collaboration with Student-Athlete Academic Services. Student-athletes were matched up with faculty (within in their major) for an informal networking opportunity over breakfact in the Edge Dining Hall. Six breakfasts were held during the fall semester and four more in the spring. We chronicled Dr. DesRoches’ initiative in September on RamblinWreck.com.
The new initiatives were added to previously on-going programs. During the football season, two faculty / staff members are invited to each road game for the Football Guest Coach Program. As many as four faculty / staff members are guest coaches at each home game.
One of the final touches provided by Student-Athlete Academic Services are the Faculty Appreciation events as swimming & diving, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball. Student-athletes invite their professors to a selected home game to recognize them for their hardwork and dedication.
