ATLANTA – The seventh-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team will close out its regular season with a two-match road trip this weekend. The Yellow Jackets will face North Carolina Friday at 1 p.m. and will play at Duke Saturday at noon.
“This is always a big weekend when we face these two teams,” Georgia Tech head coach Bryan Shelton said. “We have had some great battles in the past and I expect the same this weekend.”
The Yellow Jackets, who have won seven straight and 10 of its last 11 matches entering this weekend’s competition, are currently in third place in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 15-5 overall record and an 8-1 conference mark. With a sweep this weekend, Tech will earn a share of the ACC regular season title.
“We have established some momentum over the past few weeks and our goal is to go up there and win both matches to go for a share of the ACC title,” Shelton said. “We just have take it one match at a time.”
North Carolina currently sits in fifth place in the ACC with a 6-3 record and are 16-7 overall. Duke (17-3, 7-1) is currently in fourth place in the ACC.
The Tar Heels hold a 24-7 all-time record against the Yellow Jackets but Tech has won four straight and six of the last seven matches between the two programs. Last season, Tech defeated Carolina, 5-2, at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Duke holds a 30-2 advantage in the all-time series with Georgia Tech but the Jackets two wins have come in the last three meetings. The Blue Devils did defeat Tech, 4-3, in last season’s meeting at Ambler Tennis Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets will return to North Carolina next week for the 2009 ACC Women’s Tennis Tournament. The event will run from Thursday, April 16 – Sunday, April 19 at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
