Women’s Tennis Victorious on Opening Day

STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Tech opened the Georgia Southern Fall Shootout collecting a pair of doubles victories and two singles wins. The tournament will conclude on Sunday with the final rounds of doubles and singles.

Play got started Saturday morning with the opening round of doubles. Tech’s Gia Cohen and Kate Sharabura partnered together to claim a 6-1 triumph over Chattanooga’s Emma van Heel and Jessie Young. Meanwhile, teammates Sophia Sassoli and Rosie Garcia Gross also picked up a doubles decision, edging Kennesaw State’s Valentina Taddia and Taylor Dean, 7-5.

In singles play, the Jackets saw victories from Garcia Gross and Sharabura. Facing Kavya Patel (Davidson), Garcia Gross rolled to a 6-1 first set and pocketed the straight-set win, edging the Wildcat, 6-4, in the second set. Sharabura continued her dominant play this fall season, collecting a straight-set win over Carolina Bulatovic (JSU). The freshman dropped only four games en route to a 6-0, 6-4 rout of Bulatovic.

Garcia Gross and Sharabura will compete for their singles flight titles on Sunday, while the Jackets will also look to capture two doubles titles on Sunday.
