Katie Bruzdzinski posted a match high 17 kills as the Michigan volleyball team defeated Georgia Tech 3-0 (30-25, 30-16, 30-16) Saturday night. With the defeat, the Yellow Jackets fall to 3-4 on the season while the Wolverines improve to 5-3.
Ulrike Stegemann led the Yellow Jackets recording nine kills and hitting .227 while Jennifer Randall posted a match-high 14 digs.
The offense was the story of the match as the Wolverines posted a .347 hitting percentage while holding Tech to a .019 percentage.
Lindsey Laband recorded 17 assists in two games of action while Allie Niekamp saw her first action as a Yellow Jacket and had 11 assists and one block assist.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Sunday at 5 p.m. taking on the Georgia Bulldogs (4-5) in Athens, Ga. in a match that will be aired on WREK radio at 91.1 FM and on www.wrek.org.
In game one, Tech fell behind 0-3 after recording three straight hitting errors. A hitting error by the Wolverines gave the Jackets their first point, and then Tech tied the score at 3-3 after a hitting error by Michigan and a kill by Stegemann. Then, with the Jackets down 4-5, Randall recorded a service ace and then Stegemann posted a kill to make the score, followed by a hitting error from Michigan and a kill from Kaminskas and Stegemann gave Tech a 10-6 lead and forced the Wolverines into a timeout. The Jackets led by as much as six at 13-7, but soon had trouble as Michigan scored on kills from Cobler and Bowman and then a service ace from Kerry Hance and a hitting error from Miller to cut the score to 14-13. The Jackets then led, 20-18 after a kill from Stegemann, but then Tech recorded nine straight errors to give Michigan a 27-21 lead. The Jackets closed the gap at 24-28 after a block from Laband and Miller and a kill from Stegemann, but Michigan went on to win the game after a kill from Bowman, 30-25.
The score was tied at 3-3 when the Wolverines took their first lead at 4-3 on a kill from Miller. Michigan would never look back, leading by as much as 14 at 23-9 as Tech’s offense struggled to sideout and recorded several hitting errors. With the score 9-21, freshman Niekamp entered the match, her first appearance as a Yellow Jacket, and led an offense which played more consistent at the end, as Tech was defeated 30-16.
In game three, the score was 8-9 when Niekamp recorded one of five service errors in the game for the Jackets to give Michigan an 8-10 lead. After that service error, the Wolverines went on a 21-8 run to win the game 30-16.
