WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Junior Bailey Hunter had 13 kills as the Georgia Tech Volleyball team (15-9, 8-4 ACC) swept Wake Forest (13-9, 6-6), 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 26-24) Friday night at Reynolds Gym. It marked the fifth straight ACC road win for the Yellow Jackets.

Hunter hit .219 on the night as she led all players with the 13 kills and also added four digs and three total blocks. Sophomore Monique Mead had eight kills, nine digs and five total blocks on just 19 swings. Freshman Jennifer Percy added nine kills for the Yellow Jackets while junior Asia Stawicka and sophomore Alexis Woodson had seven kills apiece. Woodson (five) and Stawicka (three) combined for eight total blocks as the Jackets had nine total on the night.

Georgia Tech hit .268 on the evening and held Wake Forest to .149. Senior Mary Ashley Tippins paced the offense with 39 assists and senior Jordan McCullers led the team with 13 digs. Sophomore Susan Carlson had six digs as well for Tech.

In the first set, Wake Forest went on an early 5-0 run to open up a 6-2 lead but the Yellow Jackets would not let the Demon Deacons run away with the set. Tech answered with a 6-2 run to tie it at 8. The teams traded the next several points before Georgia Tech began to pull away. With the score tied at 15, Tech went on an 8-2 run to open up a six-point lead at 23-17. Wake Forest scored three quick ones, but following a timeout the Yellow Jackets closed out the set with two points to win 25-20. Hunter (five) and Percy (four) led the Jackets in kills as they hit .175 compared to Wake Forest’s .032.

Both teams went on 10-3 runs in the second set, but the Yellow Jackets hung on to win 25-21 and take a 2-0 lead for the match. Tech had the first 10-3 run to go up 15-7 and looked like it was going to run away with the set. Wake Forest, however, had other plans and soon used a 10-3 run of its own to pull within a point at 19-18. The Yellow Jackets would never give up the lead and scored four of the final five points to take the set. Mead and Hunter had four kills apiece for the Jackets as they hit .286 and held Wake to .167.

Georgia Tech led the third set 10-7, but a 6-1 Wake Forest run gave it a 13-11 advantage. Tech answered with three straight points to re-take the lead, 14-13, and that set off a wild flurry for the rest of the set. Wake Forest was able to take a 23-20 lead and looked like it was going to force a fourth set, but the Yellow Jackets came back to score six of the final seven points to complete the sweep.

Georgia Tech now heads across I-40 to take on Duke Saturday night at 7 p.m. Live stats will be available at www.RamblinWreck.com. The Yellow Jackets lost a five-set thriller to the preseason ACC favorites at O’Keefe Gym last month.
