RALEIGH, N.C. – Senior Chrissy DeMichelis had a team-high 13 kills as the Georgia Tech Volleyball team (16-7, 10-3 ACC) swept NC State (7-9, 0-11), 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-23) Saturday night.
“It’s really nice to get two wins on the road,” said head coach Tonya Johnson. “We challenged our team all week to be more focused and competitive on the road and they responded to that very well. Hopefully this gives us more confidence has we travel to Boston College and Maryland next weekend.”
DeMichelis was the only Jacket to record double-figure kills. Senior Brittany Roderick added nine kills, while sophomore Bailey Hunter had eight. Georgia Tech hit just .165 in the match, but held NC State to a .000 clip. Junior Mary Ashley Tippins paced the offense with 36 assists, while junior Jordan McCullers had a team-high 11 digs.
In the first set, it was close for the first part. NC State took its largest lead of the set at 12-10, but the Yellow Jackets then went on a 7-2 run to open up a three-point lead, their largest of the set so far. The Wolfpack later got within a point at 18-17, but Tech closed the set out on a 7-3 run to win 25-20 and take a 1-0 lead for the match. DeMichelis had seven kills in the set for the Yellow Jackets.
The second set was tied at four when Tech used a 6-1 run to take control. NC State chipped away and got within two points but the Yellow Jackets proceeded to close out the set on a 13-4 run to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set was close most of the way with neither team leading by more than three points. It was 18-18 when the Jackets went on a 6-2 run to hold match point. NC State got within a point at 24-23 but a Monique Mead kill gave the Jackets the win.
The Yellow Jackets will remain on the road for a trip to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast next weekend. On Friday, Nov. 6, Tech will play a 7 p.m. match at Boston College. Then on Sunday, Nov. 8, the Jackets take on Maryland at 1 p.m. Live stats for both matches will be available via the Gametracker link at www.RamblinWreck.com.
