THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech volleyball team (5-6) swept the Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A&M (4-11), 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-19), Saturday as part of the Georgia Tech Invitational.
The Jackets out-hit the Lady Bulldogs .376 to .154 as Teegan Van Gunst (11k; 14d) recorded her second double-double in as many matches. Courtney Felinski also tallied 11 kills and Annika Olsen put up 15 digs to lead Tech.
Leading 5-4 in set one, the Jackets pulled away 10-5 behind the serving of London Ackermann, a pair of kills from Teegan Van Gunst and a kill from Rebecca Martin. Tech led for the remainder of the set, winning 25-18.
Tech hit .440 as a team to Alabama A&M’s .034 hitting clip in the second set. After two early ties and lead changes, the Jackets took command of the set and won 25-17.
The Jackets had five of their eight aces in the third set. Martin and Callie Bivings each had three and Teegan Van Gunst chipped in with two aces.
Set three was tied 10-10, but back-to-back service aces from Wimberly Wilson sparked the Georgia Tech offense and the Jackets closed out the match with a 25-20 victory.
Tech stretched a 7-5 lead to 15-5 behind the serving of Martin and timely kills from Lauren Pitz and Annika Van Gunst. The Lady Bulldogs put together a run coming back from 22-14 to 22-18, but Tech was able to put the set and match away on a kill from Felinski.
The Jackets are back in action tonight against host Southern Miss (11-5). First serve is set for 7 p.m. and the match will air on ESPN3.
