Laura DeMichelis recorded 14 kills and five blocks as the Georgia Tech volleyball team defeated Long Island University 3-1 (30-23, 16-30, 30-24, 33-31) in its second match of the Georgia Tech Renaissance Invitational. With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 3-2 on the season while the Blackbirds fall to 2-8 on the year.
The Yellow Jackets return to action Saturday at 8 p.m. against Western Kentucky in the final match of the Georgia Tech Renaissance Invitational.
In addition to DeMichelis, freshman Talisa Kellogg came off the bench to record 13 kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Also leading the Jackets offensively were Ulrike Stegemann, who had nine kills and hit .375 and Nikki Kaminskas who had three kills and hit .500. Setter Lindsey Laband recorded 46 assists in the match along with two kills on six attempts.
At the net, Tech was led by Kaminskas, who had a career-high five blocks in the match, followed by Stegemann who posted four block assists and Abby Showers and Laband who each had two block assists.
Defensively, Jennifer Randall posted a match-high 14 digs in the match while Showers followed with 12 and Michelle Kandell had 10.
The Blackbirds were led by Martina Wagner who had 22 kills and 12 digs in the match.
