ATLANTA – The Wake Forest Volleyball team (9-4, 2-1 ACC) hit .350 and had 14 blocks en route to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-13) win over Georgia Tech (7-7, 0-3) Sunday afternoon at O’Keefe Gym. The Yellow Jackets were led by sophomore Monique Mead, who had 11 kills and six digs.
Tech hit .040 as a team and had just two blocks, while committing seven service errors. Junior Bailey Hunter had eight kills for the Jackets and junior Asia Stawicka added seven as she hit .462. No one else for Tech had more than one kill. Senior Mary Ashley Tippins led the team with 27 assists and senior Jordan McCullers had 13 digs.
Wake was led by Andrea Beck who had 12 kills.
Wake Forest jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first set and never looked back en route to a 25-17 win. Georgia Tech was never able to mount a run and was down 1-0 for the match. Wake led by as many as nine points and the Yellow Jackets couldn’t get any closer than six the rest of the way. Hunter and Mead combined for seven of Tech’s 10 kills in the set as it hit .000 and had three serving errors.
Wake took control of the second set as well with a quick 4-0 spurt after the Yellow Jackets used their own 4-0 run to tie it at nine apiece. Tech was never able to recover as the Demon Deacons went on to a 25-16 win and took a 2-0 lead for the match. Mead had four kills for the Jackets, but they hit just .097. Wake, meanwhile, hit .308 and had five blocks.
Tech held a 2-1 lead in the third set but it was all Wake Forest after that. The Deacons went on a 7-1 run to open up an 8-3 lead and led by as many as five points for the rest of the set as they went on to the 25-13 win. Mead led the Jackets with four kills in the set.
Georgia Tech will now hit the road again for two straight weekends of ACC play. Up first, Tech travels to the Commonwealth of Virginia to face UVA on Friday at 7 p.m. and then Virginia Tech Saturday at 6 p.m. Follow all of the action with live stats at RamblinWreck.com.
