THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech Volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 victory (25-15, 25-13, 25-15) against the Charleston Southern Buccaneers on day two of the Courtyard Invite at O’Keefe Gym. The Yellow Jackets face SMU later Saturday at 7 p.m. to conclude the tournament.
Senior Monique Mead led the squad with 13 kills, while senior Bailey Hunter added nine and sophomore Courtney Felinski contributed six kills. Defensively, junior Quinn Evans collected a team-best four blocks, while senior Nicki Meyer put up 13 digs.
Three Buccaneers tallied four kills, while libero Ashley Higgenbothem had a team-best 15 digs. Charleston Southern hit .027 as a team, while the Yellow Jackets recorded a .341 attacking percentage.
With the score tied 3-3 in the first set, Tech took the lead and never looked back, winning the set 25-15. Hunter led the squad with 12 kills as the Yellow Jackets hit for a .444 percentage and held the Buccaneers to just a .071 hitting clip.
After taking an 8-5 lead in the second set, the Buccaneers closed the gap to one, 9-8. Tech then went on a five-point rally to open the game up and eventually take the set 25-13. Mead led the Yellow Jackets in the second set, connecting on five of her six total attempts (.833). Felinski added four kills and sophomore Zoey Morton collected a career-high four serving aces in the set, adding to Tech’s 11 total aces in the match.
The third set saw Georgia Tech use an early 6-1 run to go up 14-5 and the Jackets never looked back en route to a 25-15 win, which clinched the sweep. Freshman Wimberly Wilson recorded her first collegiate ace in the set.
