Tech's Oliver Takes Eighth in 800 Free at U.S. Nationals

INDIANAPOLIS – Georgia Tech junior Eduardo Oliver opened the 2003 ConocoPhillips U.S. National Swimming Championships in fine fashion Tuesday as he placed eighth in the 800-meter freestyle, the meet’s first event. Behind Oliver’s swim the Jackets are in sixth place on the men’s side with 11 points.

Oliver posted a lifetime best swim of 8:18.57 in the eighth-place finish. Former Tech standout Leo Salinas, a 2002 graduate, placed fifth in 8:14.75. American record holder Larsen Jensen won the event in 7:54.86.

The meet resumes Wednesday with several of the 15 Jackets at the meet in action. Prelims begin at 9 a.m. followed by finals at 6 p.m.
